What Are Flow Sensors?

Avatar

A flow sensor, also called a flow meter, is a device used to measure the volume or mass flow of a fluid (liquid, gas, steam) through a pipe or channel per unit time. Its core function is to convert fluid parameters into output electrical signals (analog or digital) to facilitate real-time monitoring, recording, and control of gas flow.

What are the common types of flow sensors?

There are many types of flow sensors, and the following are some common types listed.

Medical flow sensors

They work by detecting changes in fluid or gas flow using various principles, including differential pressure, and thermal and ultrasonic methods. Medical flow sensors are important components of equipment such as ventilators, anesthesia machines, intravenous infusion systems, and diagnostic equipment.

Thermal mass flow sensor

It mainly measures the mass flow of gas by detecting the temperature change when the gas flows through the heating element.

It is widely used in petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food processing, etc. to measure the flow of gas (such as oxygen, nitrogen, combustible gas) or steam.

Differential pressure flow sensor

These sensors measure the pressure difference on both sides of an obstacle in the flow path. The pressure drop is directly related to the flow rate, allowing accurate measurement.

Commonly used in HVAC systems (HVAC), to help regulate the flow of air and fluids, to achieve efficient climate control), as well as exhaust gas and waste liquid flow statistics and energy consumption monitoring.

Insertion flow sensor

Based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, the flow is calculated by measuring the induced voltage generated by the flow of conductive media (such as water and gas) in the pipe.

Widely used in flow measurement of conductive or non-conductive media such as water, gas, and chemical raw materials, such as water heater inlet flow control, sewage treatment, and petrochemical pipeline monitoring.

Air flow sensor

By measuring the air flow entering the engine, it is converted into an electrical signal and transmitted to the electronic control unit (ECU) as the basic data for calculating the injection amount and ignition time.

Mainly used in electronic fuel injection engines, it is one of the key sensors for controlling fuel injection and ignition systems.
